the most mindblowing thing i ever read about music production was how the majority of tracks on heaven or las vegas and blue bell knoll by cocteau twins didn’t have a single synth on them and all the synth-like tonality was just guitars painstakingly processed thru digital fx processors/reverbs, pedals, synced delays etc and noise gates that were envelope-triggered by a click track in a bunch of elaborate patchings, almost like a modular synth in practice but with the guitar generating the tone instead of an oscillator. robin guthrie is a god
this is just so insanely innovative for 1988-90. i can hardly even come up with stuff like this with the convenience of ableton and pirated plugins, much less taking the time to coordinate physical hardware and tape to transform sound like this
